The House of Alakēśvara–De Alwis
Rayo Withanage is a principal of the House of Alakēśvara–De Alwis, an eight-century-old Sri Lankan lineage whose history spans government, commerce, science and philanthropy. Originating at the crossroads of Indian Ocean trade, the family evolved from merchant-princes and royal ministers of the Kotte Kingdom into landholders, senior colonial administrators, plantation entrepreneurs and, more recently, participants in global finance, technology and international enterprise.
Its continuity across successive political eras was sustained through enduring landholdings, public service and longstanding alliances. The family’s genealogy and wider historical significance are documented at dealwis.org, which supports independent academic research into its place within the history of Sri Lanka and the Indian Ocean.
